Playa del Carmen, Mexico is generally not considered a child friendly destination. It’s one of the fastest growing cities in the world, catering to the needs of not only the rich and famous, but also party animals from all over the world. Arriving at Playa del Carmen in the evening, with three kids and all of our luggage, I was literally panic-stricken. We were surrounded by a big soup of people, for as far we could see. Most of them, either happily intoxicated or uneasily sober. As opposed to other parts of Mexico, all was marked in US Dollars. Tears welled up in my eyes, and I wanted to crawl back to the small local Mexican towns, that we had thus far resided in. After eight months of residing in the buzzing town of Sayulita, Puerto Escondido in the state of Oaxaca (Mexico) is food to my soul. As I walk along the beach, I feel my shoulders slowly relax and I can breathe again. There’s nothing but a deafening silence. A far away ocean swell. My drifting thoughts. I see fishermen, surfers. Dogs wandering around a stretch of golden sand. A lonely jogger. A deserted lifeguard tower. I instantly know why I came here, why life had taken me by the hand and gently guided me here. Who is Nicky?

Today I am meeting the British Nicky Ransome from ‘The Orca of Sayulita’. She has invited me to go whale watching with her, and I am beyond excited to meet both this passionate young woman and the whales of Sayulita. As we chat easily I am instantly drawn to her happy and almost childlike ways. She’s an open, free-spirited soul who has lived all over the world, following the singing of the whales. We soon come to realize that, following the sound of the waves, we have lived in many of the same places. Today, the whales and waves are bringing us together in Sayulita, Mexico. Keep reading
